• because of all that we've said so far about what eros is and what it does and to talk about eros and the parthias on
• about what eros is and what it does and to talk about eros and the parthias on the partheos for the path means of
• um because of course as we've said eros stimulates
• soulmaking it's a part of soulmaking and soulmaking always involves eros as we're using those terms they
• implicate and involve each other so eros and soulmaking um
• vision image fantasy of awakening is so talking about eros and soulmaking with respect to the path
• implicit in the vision image of the path and so if we talk about eros and soul making and
• senses and life so that to talk about eros for the path and on the path is not
• for the path and on the path is not really separate from talking about eros and soulmaking and its relationship to
• um in terms of the directionality of eros and soulmaking with respect to the world so these three are connected
• awakening and a path eros and the path three three aspects they are actually
• talk about soulmaking we are talking about eros psyche and logos in other words this this erotic movement this
• of course with the whole world and all that so eros sends pleasure and awakening and they're and they're sort
• there's a bit more possibility for some kind of eros and soulmaking than with the atomistic process view but the the
• view of cutting the papancha that uh the eros and the soulmaking is limited path says
• whole movement there again is towards the unfabricated the eros the erotic movement and attraction is away from
• the craving that goes with that and soul making and the eros that goes with that so if a punch a craving on one side and
• so if a punch a craving on one side and psyche soulmaking eros on the other side
• side so where there's eros there will be soul making what's the difference and we've
• papancha and soulmaking and we you know eros and craig we've talked about the the lessening of contraction the the
• so that for example if we talk about sense pleasure eros in in touching a lover in the in the touch of two lovers
• lover in the in the touch of two lovers or eros with respect to the the touch between two lovers
• missing ingredient or is it actually soulmaking that there is in the eros fantasies images dimensionalities
• in in the erotic other in the touch itself in the sense of the eros in the autoeroticism all of that
• and in the lover's touch there's this eros and soulmaking with respect to the centers that's that's in other words how
• centers that's that's in other words how are the senses viewed what eros is soul making with respect to the senses the
• to neutron and unpleasant we're looking at that what's the eros and soulmaking that's allowed by the conception by the
• the male buddhism or bodhisattvas there there's eros between the female and the mana the female is often
• say cutting the papancha where there's almost no eros allowed or moving away from it towards the unfabricated there's
• um several times as we go on but here there's eros depicted symbolized between if you like the
• different notion implicit or an uh a very different eros allowed um between the practitioner and the
• stress it limits the soulmaking and eros in relation to the senses and in relation therefore to the world and to
• talking about with the imaginal etc and eros or the uh vadriana versions of that where they expect overlap i would say
• being exposed to or we're in and it has implications for eros and soulmaking
• back to that but let's just start there so we're looking at where does the eros get to go where does it get to be
• could have with them um a lot of eros um
• and the senses there is only craving there is not eros in other words there's no
• um rather than um this of all the eros going to the unfabricated and then then there's kind
• take that statement and replace the word sexuality with eros the degree and kind of a person's eros reaches up into the
• sexuality with eros the degree and kind of a person's eros reaches up into the topmost summit of her or his spirit
• talking about the degree and the kind of eros will shape determine open to lesser or more
• etc degree and kind of a person's eros determines the degree and kind of the
• we might ask in relation to this what is it then that might limit the eros with regard to the path
• um in other words if the eros is determining the path but it but then if
• determining the path but it but then if the eros is limited it will limit the kind of path
• body or whatever but what what what limits um eros with regard to the path
• that actually undercut the eros that was allowed in relationship to the world and and the
• um of of the eros by just sort of it's okay it's okay if you feel hot it's okay but
• certain amount of heroes determines the errors and the eros and the soulmaking shape and allow and determine
• but it's also in terms of deflating the eros defeating the soulmaking dynamic that the way that expands the way that
• idea of the libido which is similar to similar to what we're calling eros but lacking the dimension out is movement
• his meaning of libido to what we're calling eros how much um the limiting of the eros in this
• calling eros how much um the limiting of the eros in this anti-libidinal movement is coming in
• that there's a kind of restraining of what we're calling eros it's limited because of this anti-dividual ego
• protect oneself from disappointment or just the discomfort of that much eros that much libido flowing through the
• the era of psychological dynamic because we're pulling back the eros we're not allowing the eros because of whatever
• we're pulling back the eros we're not allowing the eros because of whatever whatever reasons
• um eros and how it um chooses creates or finds a path
• it will choose find or create so we've said that eros needs a perception of otherness right remember that euros
• this collapse into union into oneness so eros needs a perception of otherness and something in that other needs to have
• needs to be a fascination with the other that's necessary to eros a fascination with the other and part of the
• before so what this means in relation to eros for the path and what eros then does
• so what this means in relation to eros for the path and what eros then does with the powerful makes of a path or
• with the powerful makes of a path or what path eros makes what it means is that in order for to
• what it means is that in order for to have eros for the path it means i mean i'm i'm deeply fully in love with the
• or my center that with awakening in order to have eros for the path and for awakening i need to have a vision a
• of beyond that i that i want to know in order for the eros to really impregnate the path or to have an erotic a really
• about reducing my suffering that doesn't allow eros it doesn't allow enough errors just about reducing my suffering
• seeing and sensing the path and conceiving of it eros cannot really establish in relation to such such a
• larger there's more otherness there and therefore more eros you understand
• you understand more eros more otherness more because there's more otherness more beyond
• there's more otherness more beyond there's more eros can get constellated there
• erotic relations with the path degrees of eros with the path itself and with practice
• um there's still going to be this is where it's interesting euros eros is in us as human beings so there's still
• um that is consolated by the eros in other words the eros in the being will will
• that is consolated by the eros in other words the eros in the being will will constellate a relationship with some
• here it's not just a reduction of suffering so the eros has come in created a kind of otherness but in this
• the intimacy the touch of life etc so eros is um finding some otherness there and this
• desire for the intimacy but there the eros is limited in into how much it can actually expand the notion of life if
• vision of awakening um it will only allow a limited eros a limited falling in love with the path
• movement towards awakening so there's still eros trying to do its thing constellating another creating a
• path he might he might say well they just don't have much eros and they don't have much psyche and that's why they're
• so if a person has um limited libido limited eros and and sort of psyche if you like
• fantasy of the path and awaken will also limit the eros for the path and and awakening the eros that we can really
• limit the eros for the path and and awakening the eros that we can really feel and and have in in relationship to
• where are those limits coming from how is it that the eros or the psyche or the logos got gets limited in these ways
• from but but if there's a limit on the libido on the eros and the psyche then it might be enough that the limited
• someone with much more libido much more eros will need if they start to have an
• they need more beyond why because the eros needs it need and it will create it both it will
• discover it or find it people with a lot of eros need a greater um a a wider path a deeper path they
• um that they want this more will and and that they discover because of the eros and because of the expansion of the
• can't just be for the unfabricated why because the eros is pushing penetrating opening expanding and and in its
• is and can be and it's all coming from the eros predominantly has come from the eros
• and it's all coming from the eros predominantly has come from the eros psychologus dynamic
• psychologus dynamic the eros can be one of the things people with a lot of eros will
• the eros can be one of the things people with a lot of eros will um if they're not blocked it will it
• dynamic that you're a psychologos and the eros in all kinds of ways
• awakening if a person's eros is strong enough though it will expand that image that
• there's not enough questioning of it then the eros and the era psychologus dynamic can't expand it can't flower but

Eros and Equanimity in the Movements of Soul - (Of Hermits and Lovers - The Alchemy of Desire) 99 mentions

• um i would include that soulmaking involves eros uh when we ask what the soul mean and if
• in the imaginal experience now we said yesterday that eros is central in this
• we were calling the small definition of eros we said the eros is the desire the wanting for more contact with more
• there are certain aspects of the experience of eros that uh we will notice in our experience
• we will notice in our experience so for example eros involves there will be some kind of
• some kind of love in the experience of eros and there's many different kinds of love there will be some kind of sense of
• point out in terms of aspects of the experience of eros a couple of other ones arousal
• as one manifestation of eros it may be that if someone
• that they can measure that there's arousal even with um non-sexual eros in in the way that we're using it in the
• way that we're uh calling part of our range of what eros means certainly that's possible
• means certainly that's possible but what we can say as part of eros is an arousal of interest
• interest and the openness that usually goes with eros this tends to energize arouse and energize the energy body okay
• draw attention to um in the experience of eros one is dynamism and uh one is uh what i'd like
• uh eros is dynamic in the sense you can you can hear it because the wanting the
• attraction movement towards if you like the object the erotic object but eros has a dynamism beyond that which uh i
• if you recall that small definition of eros um
• this more is extremely significant classically eros was part of a band of uh gods or demigods that were called the
• uh gods or demigods that were called the erotis and there was eros and one of them was called pothos and potos is this
• horizon to the beyond there's a infinite yearning that goes with eros so to speak so eros is always accompanied by pothos
• yearning that goes with eros so to speak so eros is always accompanied by pothos and and that in our sort of more dry
• talking about here when there is eros there is this pothos with it there's this desire for more
• movement there of the psyche with the eros and this desire for more actually starts
• kinds of shades of light and characters shining out of them and so the eros is then further inflamed further amplified
• usually is over time so the eros is inflamed more and that again has this wanting more in it and so
• and the logos i'll explain what i mean eros psychologos eros is the eros as we've explained this movement the psyche
• so these three era psychologos um the the movement of eros and that particular kind of desire the totality
• be blocked through the restrictions on eros perhaps we feel that that energy is too much we're not okay handling that
• way it opens the heart all of that so the blocks in the eros psychologus dynamic
• um we could also say that uh okay so we have this small definition of eros that we that we've defined that we've given
• twice now but in a way when we also use the word eros because of its tendency to want to
• opening and complication um it's almost as if eros really implies with it it involves with it already
• actually meaning this kind of larger definition of the whole eros as it is in the soulmaking dynamic in the era
• so there's a kind of larger definition of eros with a kind of larger implication of what's involved with it
• mention it um that eros then is clearly not equivalent with matter
• equivalent with matter um i would say that eros it's similar to when we said soulmaking always involves
• other talks um eros because it is involved with soul making involves soulmaking eros always
• um eros because it is involved with soul making involves soulmaking eros always includes some kind of love
• expressing what's the character of it the quality of it but eros is though it includes love in a way it's it's more
• implications of what we've just said of the way eros operates in the soulmaking dynamic
• dynamic eros actually um
• it both needs and creates and discovers otherness eros is uh implies and involves otherness tuners
• so it it needs a polarity eros needs this polarity of something that it's attracted to it
• it needs that to further stimulate the eros so it needs this tunis it needs this otherness this
• facets and dimensions this otherness is plural that are attractive to the eros if you like it needs it but it also
• one but i need to retain the two the eros needs to retain the tooth and it will stimulate further and and create
• so intrinsic to or implicit in in the movement of eros as it is allowed to the extent that it's allowed to fertilize
• the erotic connection again it's a it's a a need a necessity for eros and it's also a creation of eros it will create
• a a need a necessity for eros and it's also a creation of eros it will create uh some beyond what i already know
• already know and experience which serves to attract the eros more now that beyondness is not totally
• package of soulmaking part of the whole constellation of eros and what eros constellates both a be honest and a i
• in both uh if you like captivate the eros so
• think about now the relationship between eros and equanimity there's quite a lot to explore there and
• often think don't imagine go together eros and equanimity what is the relationship are they mutually exclusive
• inseminating giving giving itself the eros psychologos uh the different dimensions just just feeding more and
• with an image and there's some kind of eros in relationship with that image as there will be when an image is imaginal
• there will be when an image is imaginal some kind of eros could be sexual could be not sexual whatever
• um that becomes imagining alive imaginatively deepened there's the eros there
• three aspects and a fourth aspect the eros itself in other words our very sense of the
• in other words our very sense of the eros involved in relationship to the image the imaginal uh the the eros with
• eros involved in relationship to the image the imaginal uh the the eros with the image neurotic connection with the
• psychologos so that the eros itself that we are experiencing our errors right now in
• itself can become uh essentially a sense of theophany the eros itself is sent to be sacred sensed to be divine in
• towards object towards self towards world and towards eros self other world eros it wants to move in all those
• world and towards eros self other world eros it wants to move in all those directions
• those directions the fire of soulmaking the fire of uh the eros and the erotic imaginal
• the self in the attention allows it to to be fertilized by image and eros and it comes alive or the world or whatever
• it comes alive or the world or whatever or the eros itself so sometimes it's just a matter of attention
• or the errors so there's a sense somehow i have all this eros towards this person that i'm perceiving you know with such
• um but i i am feeling myself as just a human and my eros is just maybe a little bit embarrassing uh or uh clumsy or
• movement the soulmaking dynamic the eros hasn't reached there to bring it imaginingly alive
• including the directions of self other world and eros where i don't tend to lean habitually
• or that something is very hard to tolerate the eros is hard to tolerate or we're toppling over in some way in other
• analogy can you see that if the flow of the eros want it is allowed to go in these different directions towards the
• while ago and she felt like that there was a lot of eros with with a certain image etc and there's too much intensity
• energy body specifically around her heart area with the eros and with the beauty and the opening and the sort of
• started the whole thing was the image and the beauty and the eros there and as the energy built with the eros in her
• and the beauty and the eros there and as the energy built with the eros in her energy body then started to give just
• that especially when there's intense eros or intense sexual energy as well it often gets caught somewhere in the body
• what wants to move through us in terms of eros in terms of energy in terms of beauty and opening and all that what can
• constellation of self other world and eros and that is recognizing for instance in
• i should point out that um okay so we've got self other world eros an energy body an imaginal and the emotions that are
• it's not that all these elements self are the world eros and the energy image emotion
• order some people are actually open to explore this practice of eros and opening to desire etc at the same time
• but can you see again that um if the eros is allowed to do its thing and inseminate the whole
• soulmaking move and inseminate psycheon logos and re-insemina eros and spread out that way and spread out in
• other but the self and the world and the eros itself then uh from what i've said or can you get the sense how there's a
• equanimity there will be equanimity that comes from the eros being allowed to do its thing not from shutting down the
• its thing not from shutting down the eros so we tend to think either i mean a
• so we tend to think either i mean a state of desire or eros or i'm in a state of equanimity there's a way of
• going about it like that but if i actually allow the eros and will come talk more to allow the desire in
• different ways then actually i can have an equanimous eros if we use that language at least a balanced eros let's
• an equanimous eros if we use that language at least a balanced eros let's say that
• say that and if we allow eros to do its thing and open up in all these dimensions and
• the whole soulmaking dynamic or the whole movement of eros when it's allowed to do its thing
• there are certainly differences um of course between eros and equanimity conceived in in a buddhist way
• there's a quietening of the fabrication eros on the other hand in distinction to that eros actually moves in the
• eros on the other hand in distinction to that eros actually moves in the direction of more fabrication more
• the fabrication that comes in out of eros in in when it's allowed to impregnate the euro psychologous dynamic
• powerful thing that allows so to speak equanimity in regard to eros balance etc it's that balance of the tightrope of

• exploring the uh and opening up the the possible manifestations of eros and its relation with the imaginal and
• at investigating um and explaining what eros when it is open what eros will open for us open to
• um and explaining what eros when it is open what eros will open for us open to us
• co-constellation of self other world in general and the eros so that a particular kind of eros gives rise to a
• world in general and the eros so that a particular kind of eros gives rise to a particular perception of other
• this also so we said self other world and eros they get co-consolated together so all this applies this um
• involve and include the sense of the world and the sense of eros itself if if the era psychologos dynamic is
• eventually and even divinity self other world and eros itself so when a few talks ago i used that term
• actually we'll come back to that as a as a facet of eros as something to recognize as an aspect of eros that
• a facet of eros as something to recognize as an aspect of eros that there was an autoeroticism that was if
• there was an autoeroticism that was if you like part of eros what i really meant there was that that
• and experience it excuse me eros from just an experience of
• happy or whatever and so what distinguishes eros from that and this is something we'll come back to in in
• something we'll come back to in in regards to the distinctions between eros and matter etc is that one of the things
• and matter etc is that one of the things is that eros has this auto eroticism is an aspect to it meaning that the self is
• and not just the self but also the self's eros so whatever image of erotic connection is is involved in the
• of self and other whatever eros that the self is seen imagining to be participating in that connection
• being penetrated or whatever it is that um eros is also kind of regarded erotically if you like so it's the kind
• in other words that too has dimensions has beauty the eros itself becomes an erotic object our own eros becomes an
• has beauty the eros itself becomes an erotic object our own eros becomes an erotic object for us so not just the
• other also the self and the images itself that comes alive this eros towards the self because the the self is
• a given dimensionality of an imaginal dimensionality and also the eros that the self feels etc is also becomes an
• almost like wanting to taste it to connect with it to open to the very eros more as beauty as dimensionality as
• we can say that a desire is not eros when it arises from and when it is serving the kind of narrow
• narrow habitual solidified self is not eros imaginal uh desire can be eros is eros
• eros imaginal uh desire can be eros is eros the same with the sense of the other
• forth between the sort of small definition of eros is just this wanting of connection and the larger definition
• examples that come specifically out of um out of a kind of sexual eros that's working in in the imaginal
• felt to be uh kind of expressing its own eros it's uh as flame as fire and sensing into that each thing each
• being and the world as a whole uh it's eros its desire was that it wanted me to love it
• love it the eros that i was sensing into there was each thing each being and the world
• and the things of the world and so in myself i felt the eros the the i felt the desire to respond to this
• with it um i also felt that the eros um
• were the areas that i was feeling was um the eros of the divine in other words this was the gods if you like or buddha
• and uh as i said before eros gives rise to actually support and nourishes an increase in the way we love
• beauties and plural and their divinity so eros opens all this because of what we've all been taught all of what we've
• this kind of relationship um the eros there if it's allowed can actually start to
• that is you so to speak um and so that the eros is is um if you like moving there to the to
• then be um that one one feels that eros open up that um relationship with the matter of
• was in became a heavenly realm infused with divine eros that was the sense that i was
• and in this imaginal perception in this cosmoporosis eros was woven into the cosmos
• cosmos was felt seen to be the garden of eros a garden of delight
• garden of delight um and with all that of course eros was right there was something fundamentally
• right there was something fundamentally profoundly right about eros um it it had its it has its basic
• things in the cosmos actually permeating the cosmos and eros is divine in that in that imaginal perception opened up eros
• the cosmos and eros is divine in that in that imaginal perception opened up eros is divine
• really a profound gift that all of this was gift the eros was gift and the cosmos was gift so the whole cosmos was
• it was the divine purpose of the cosmos to express eros to me to love me and give me delight so i was
• if you like a graced recipient of divine eros now at the very same time i knew it wasn't just me it it applied to everyone
• and expressing um eros uh so the cosmos is erotic and again
• imaginal role of herself my role and my ability to let eros flow through me flow from me to others to create beauty
• um a dance of love of eros of delight if you like
• then the cosmos after that is again infused with eros um and our dance our loving is if you
• like mirroring or echoing or infused with the divine cosmic eros and this is something that can happen between two
• um giving her pleasure again with the eros and the love and then and then the cosmic oasis led to
• open up in perception and if we allow eros to expect to to have and inseminate fully
• whole movement here um with eros is that it it opens up the range of sacrednesses that we can feel
• self and amplifying that and also towards the the sense of eros itself
• expansion the center the self and of the eros itself and even of the world um as we said the soulmaking dynamite
• um and and perhaps the sense of love itself of our sense of love of eros is also open and it doesn't seem to be
• i said several times now it's possible also the sense of eros is seen and felt erotically and give an
• um we we feel something like a divine a divinity of eros or divine it's divine eros that infuses the cosmos my eros
• divinity of eros or divine it's divine eros that infuses the cosmos my eros this eros that i feel
• eros that infuses the cosmos my eros this eros that i feel um in me coming from me is divine or it
• um in me coming from me is divine or it mirrors the divine eros or it comes from um the divinity the buddha nature god
• of course with respect to the world and with respect to eros itself that four-fold
• co-consolated aspects of other world eros each of them has infinite possibilities if
• so the image and the idea of each of these self other world and eros the image and idea the psyche and the logos
• expanded so my eros is mirroring the divine eros that's both an image it's an imaginal
• can see how in regard to each of these if eros gets going if the erotic movement gets going psyche and obviously
• um the we might start with uh eros in relation to an imaginal figure but
• um relationship with nature so that the again the eros spreads so the imaginal spreads to nature in the cosmic oasis
• interconnected where there's eros the psyche where this image whether zeros's image where
• image whether zeros's image where there's image there's eros and we start to feel when we have when
• nourished and ignited um then the eros and the love and reverence that are part of that in
• in a nutshell eros as i said
• uh if you like also co-consolated so the kind of eros is sorry the kind of sense of divinity is
• co-consulated with that other four-part co-constellation itself other eros well we could add also the sense of divinity
• it's also co-consolated with self in the sense of self of other of world of eros or even the sense of no divinity a flat
• perception idea of of um any eros or desire that might arise so these five actually are co-consolated
• cosmagon he's at another place i think he said eros is a cosmagonist it's a greek fancy greek word and cosmogonos
• our actual experience the eros opens up it gives birth to the world it gives birth to the center of
• other world um and eros and cosmopoases and also of divinity so so the eros
• um and eros and cosmopoases and also of divinity so so the eros brings with it or rather puts into
• um you know seeing our eros as divine as i said as gods as divinities as the buddha
• said as gods as divinities as the buddha nature's eros manifesting through us is a certain
• a certain um view of divinity uh there and of eros and so all of that again you can see how
• point uh you know co-consolation self are the world eros divinity um is infinite in its potential because

• a little more to unfold and unpack this movement of eros the movement of soulmaking what i've been calling the
• soulmaking what i've been calling the soulmaking dynamic or eros psychologos dynamic and
• um over over the next few talks of um opening up the possibilities of eros opening up for ourselves the
• possibilities the possible manifestations of eros in practice in life in in our existence in the way we
• also looking at um what the possibilities of eros open for us
• them at some point wow there's a lot of eros here and and often very you know sexual explicitly sexual in the imagery
• sexual explicitly sexual in the imagery and while this eros why all this sexuality so non-non sexualize sexual
• um we love eros we love that fire and we love uh
• love uh it's juiciness the juiciness of eros in a more watery metaphor
• and the more if you like the more uh eros there is flowing through us the more we love it and why eros loves
• eros there is flowing through us the more we love it and why eros loves itself will come back to that euros as
• the teachings allow it we allow that eros and the teachings the logos the the conceptual framework that we're we have
• um sanction it they they legitimize um eros the examples we give in in in the
• there's beauty there's attraction there's there's going to be eros as one kind of possibility of that attraction
• kind of possibility of that attraction so in a way eros as i said i think i said before already is eros is intrinsic
• so in a way eros as i said i think i said before already is eros is intrinsic to the imaginal we could say that so of
• course it's going to come out you do a marginal practice eros is intrinsic to it of course it's going to come up yours
• and the more you allow the imaginal the more you actually allow eros um and if an imaginal figure is felt by
• intro psychic images um eros is allowed because of the otherness there eros is an attraction
• um eros is allowed because of the otherness there eros is an attraction between otherness as we could say
• claim is erotic and it gives rise or it involves eros now always i think i've said this as
• small definition the loose definition of eros and that's the desire for contact um to open to to relate with that is
• um to open to to relate with that is eros desire for contact
• there is so to speak always more for eros the erotic movement towards that image or in relation to that image
• image or in relation to that image there's always more for the eros to open to there's always more for it to
• penetrate always more um for for the eros to know so these words penetrate open again they're
• end a point an end towards which the soul is moving and so there is the eros of that magnetic attraction of the soul
• with that and beckon us in that when that that telos implies or needs eros that erotic movement
• so we could say all this in relation to this question why all this eros while this sexual imagery even more in in the
• uh we can say that the explanation the exploration of how the fire of eros spreads how it
• um so we said that eros um
• hear us wants connection actually i used to define it that way eros wants connection
• image um eros i used to say eros wants connection with the other
• its power and potential as a word so we can add some other words eros wants um connection it wants contact it wants
• in them so eros wants all that but eros um classically in
• um classically in in greek mythology eros is um i don't know about always but often let's let's
• know about always but often let's let's say or always eros is always accompanied by
• whether we're doing a small definition of the big definition but let's see eros is accompanied by um two other gods
• um i think that's how you pronounce it um eros pothos and humorous so i think as plato says somewhere or other pothos
• movement so this pothos and humorous accompany eros now what does that mean pothos is always wanting more it
• pothos is always wanting more it accompanies eros and so so we say that eros was always accompanied by this
• accompanies eros and so so we say that eros was always accompanied by this wanting more
• because of the pothos that always goes with eros there's an endlessly dynamic quality or aspect facet to um to eros
• with eros there's an endlessly dynamic quality or aspect facet to um to eros eros is endlessly dynamic in its
• quality or aspect facet to um to eros eros is endlessly dynamic in its thrusting it's penetration it's opening
• movement with the humerus and this pothos eros is a movement it's endlessly dynamic you always want more
• so we can see as we've already said in the glossary eros is a kind of desire it's one kind of desire actually it's a
• um is related with the image or involves the imaginal eros is a kind of desire that always involves the imaginal
• um and it wants eros wants euros is a desire to know to experience the other
• movement if you like into the imaginal and eros penetrates the imaginal if you like and inseminates it or opens to it
• potentially at least so that through this thrusting and opening of eros [music]
• the era so the whole thing you're a psychological eros inseminates psycheon logos in the larger fuller more complex
• and beautiful psychean logos um in flame eros further and so you get this kind of
• always get fabricated together um so that depending on the eros and the kind of eros and how that's fabricating
• um so that depending on the eros and the kind of eros and how that's fabricating imaginably
• to come back to this but all of them if you like psyche and logos and eros is expanded
• other with self with work self other world and with eros itself so that eventually they too in this sort
• because there's the object and there's the eros with the object and self and world will be
• we could say um eros psychologos are separate things and we could talk about like we talked
• and we could talk about like we talked about eros in the sort of small definition and we could say uh i said
• this before you know eros is is really implies and involves that whole era
• making dynamic there's a way we can also say that eros psyche and logos that are eros image and concept if you
• say that eros psyche and logos that are eros image and concept if you like or idea eros image and idea are
• that are eros image and concept if you like or idea eros image and idea are aspects of psyche there are aspects of
• what does the eros desire what does it want to touch to know to penetrate and open
• some something in nature or an animal or whatever what does the eros want to touch no penetrate and open to exactly
• um image and idea it's psyche and logos eros wants psychian logos is another way of kind of thinking about what's going
• um what eros wants is more is more psyche eros wants psyche and it's endlessly if
• what eros wants is more is more psyche eros wants psyche and it's endlessly if you like desiring psyche and there's the
• myth some of you will know the myth of the love of eros and psyche and the love between eros and psyche and
• the love of eros and psyche and the love between eros and psyche and um
• but we could say in all this uh from the theoretical perspective eros what's xeros wanting in all this we could
• anyway and the object is image and idea that's really psyche it's um eros wants um soul yes
• um and the images that are second and and beautiful you know eros wants psyche wants more and more psyche
• with imaginal practice um you can see that the eros is and as i said
• that they're interchangeable um you know types strands of eros okay so let's let's linger with this for a
• the in the larger sense of intercourse and this expression of eros is being shown in the image this is what the
• um reducible interchangeable or one kind of eros with another etc and if we extend that point you also see
• but there was something in in the holding hands there was eros there in the hands it was
• said the the possible manifestations of eros in this case of sexual sexually erotic imagery imaginal so we come back
• so we're interested here in opening and allowing the eros so that the eros can open and allow the soulmaking and

• real these different stages of realization that eros in relationship to these different if you like uh beyonds
• that we're yet to encounter the fantasies in the eros in relation to these universal uh experiences of

• object whatever that is and as we said of the self and the world and and eros itself and again this is this is uh what
• recognition through the um spreading of the eros through the allowing and exploration that you're of
• that draw everything into that soulmaking dynamic so that the eros itself as we said will will come to be
• also regarded as divine not just yourself other word but also the eros and one begins through practice opening
• that we participate in the divinities eros my eros participates in the divinity's eros my awareness
• eros my eros participates in the divinity's eros my awareness participates in uh the the divine
• don't allow and explore eros image and soulmaking and all that and
• without you also with a very limited eros a limited um allowance of
• existence the eros uh that allowed to do its thing supported to do its thing will discover
• of the potential space so to speak that the eros psyche logos dynamic can expand into
• that i haven't come to yet that if the eros in relationship to her him them is allowed to remain and allowed to grow
• pains to really want to stress on this retreat eros can incline uh towards the unfabricated transcendent and eros can
• retreat eros can incline uh towards the unfabricated transcendent and eros can also incline to um soulmaking
• that and there's euros in that direction in relation to that and there's eros in the direction of fabricating
• uh between the two uh inclinations and movements of eros towards the transcendent and the
• double movement that double movement of the eros so something that goes towards the dissolution the oneness into the
• um so the near enemy of the inclination and eros and movement towards the unfabricated we could say
• of that um that movement of eros to soulmaking fabrication to the imaginal
• movement is divine is the buddha nature the very eros towards the unfabricated the movement towards transcendence and
• soulmaking dynamic and the movement of eros that it allows both the being aspect if you like
• doesn't just want that there's some eros there's some wanting certainly for that
• an openness of what liberation means if eros is allowed and if eros in relationship to dharma is allowed
• the dharma is needs to open up through just just when we allow eros it will need to open up and and as i said
• um through a kind of phenomenology of eros or of soulmaking we arrive at
• well from what we've been exploring and just having a bit of fun now the eros psychologos dynamic because of what it
• for the divine you're a psychological when there's divine eros when there's um the eros of the buddha nature it will
• when there's divine eros when there's um the eros of the buddha nature it will unfold multiplicity multi-dimensionality
• yes we start to experience we said my eros is divine
• your participation in the divine eras that my ears is the divine eros and that the soul is divine or the soul echoes or
• succinctly when we recognize the presence of eros in our life and soulmaking we start to
• and explore it and we give a place to eros we pay attention to what it does in its movement
• soulmaking process in ignited by heroes driven by eros um
• aspects whose divinity is eventually seen as the eros itself so that the sense
• and the concept and the perception of my eros is the eros of divinity is divinities eros is god's eros is the
• eros is the eros of divinity is divinities eros is god's eros is the buddha's eros is the eros of the buddha
• divinities eros is god's eros is the buddha's eros is the eros of the buddha nature becomes one of the available
• centers one of the available perceptions of eros foreign
• phenomological point of view one says my eros is um creating discovering all these
• in in this unfolding it also has the experience in the sense that one's eros is the divinity's eros is the buddha
• experience in the sense that one's eros is the divinity's eros is the buddha nature's eros one could just as well
• is the divinity's eros is the buddha nature's eros one could just as well arrive at from the phonological
• perspective the equivalent statement that the divinity is eros is creating um discovering all these facets all
• top-down statement of metaphysics the divine eros or the divine soul or divine mind or divine where it creates
• the metaphysical so eros allowed unblocked unfettered unhindered
• and including that is is the sense of the divinity of eros as we said and all of that could be a kind of
• explanation as well for the um ascent of eros historically from within um culture and also within religious traditions
• at the expense of well the constraining of eros let's put it that way and uh and they're certainly
• it that way and uh and they're certainly constraining of the sexual eros and how it was regarded and the movement towards
• now there's ascent historically that we said can be viewed of eros that can be viewed um as a kind of cultural movement
• so the very highest aspect of the divine getting talking about the ascent of eros historically the very highest aspect is
• is desire the eros of the divine so in the whole conception of what
• um in the eros in the love making and the sexual lovemaking we could say in the in
• meditative trainings and openings serving and participating the eros the erotic soul mating making the sexual
• it includes something about as we've touched on before the eros between if you like the transcendently divine mind
• movement historically there's this ascent of eros the ways we think about it and its movement towards
• uh conceiving thinking conceiving of eros which
• should need to say that at this point but eros implies for us soulmaking in the imaginal we've been thinking and
• the imaginal we've been thinking and conceiving of eros as basic like we just conceive of that as something really
• um eros as basic but eros is not basic it's not
• eros as basic but eros is not basic it's not fundamental it's a dependent origination
• and you can see in your life how how much of a depends origination eros is there's actually nothing that is basic
• we've been playing with the idea of eros as something basic
• and even as the divinity of eros and all the divine yours is something based we've been
• basically true we know that eros is not basic fundamental
• productions of time talking about the eros again between that timeless transcendent
• experience appearance we participate in that eros in that love we are that the world is that
• we're not separate from that love we're not separate from that eros we're in it it's in us it's through us

• pathologized this is delusion this is crazy uh etc or the eros towards the world etc so pathology
• why shouldn't one be extreme in one's eros for the transcendent why shouldn't one be extreme why shouldn't one burn
• um directions of religiosity the eros there is limited uh when people pathologize that or judge it as extreme
• pathologize that or judge it as extreme uh that kind of desire their eros in that direction is just very limited and
• perspectives looks too intense it's too extreme uh this eros in whatever direction
• which would be a little bit in line with what we're saying is like let the eros lead what if we trust the eros and trust
• what we're saying is like let the eros lead what if we trust the eros and trust even the directions that it wants to go
• transcendent beautiful how how does it want to where does the eros want to move and trusting that and trusting that as
• will start moving out to touch everything else the the eros the direction here the directionality of the
• direction here the directionality of the eros and the directionality of the soul making will spread
• it starts spreading something happens why if if i don't dampen the eros if i don't block the movements and the
• there's a different kind of imbalance that comes when the eros is blocked or the psyche is blocked or the logos is
• transcendent unfabricated because um the eros is dampened it's a movement of contraction of fear of eros and
• um the eros is dampened it's a movement of contraction of fear of eros and um i'm afraid of sexuality i i the body
• could be as we said in any direction such well what about trusting eros and just opening uh the space for that
• little time um talking a bit more about how eros and and uh in its insemination it's ignition
• it's it's unknown to me now it's part of the beyond of the eros of that whole soulmaking movement i just don't know
• notice that even if we have um a strong desire a strong eros flowing through us for the unfabricated i want
• in in that desire and supporting and following that that eros for the unfabricated we do not the way
• um reigning in the eros with regard to sense pleasure certainly rate raining in
• the craving but it doesn't make the distinction with regard to eros so um it kind of all gets as we've said
• contraction of view and contraction actually of eros etc that we were alluding to earlier
• being anti -sensual eros so it's like sensual eros eros regarding in relation to sense
• -sensual eros so it's like sensual eros eros regarding in relation to sense experience is is something that uh there
• um that movement so they can be eros for the transcendent
• the transcendent um and there can be eros for the buddha to a certain extent in terms of soul
• dismissal a refusal of place to and a fear of sensual eros sensualist eros if you like eros with
• fear of sensual eros sensualist eros if you like eros with regard to sensuality and out of that
• the image and the concept of awakening is exactly a life without eros that's what awakening looks like it's a
• that's what awakening looks like it's a life without eros the flame has gone out and there's certainly no errors towards
• awakening uh as as what it looks like is a life without eros [music]
• movement the movement of soulmaking the movement of eros the movement of creation discovery etc
• like like we've talked about between eros and craving for example etc um but more it's like what's blocked for
• multi-dimensionalizing of perception etc eros the imaginal and soulmaking comes in to enrich imbue complexify widen
• acknowledge this acknowledge the presence of eros fantasy and soulmaking in our lives in what we love and if we
• and there's also a place for the different directions of eros towards the senses towards the um
• to to soulmaking and to answer that the movements of eros in the soul and the opening the discovery of of the sacred
• now if we're talking about um eros we're we're talking as i mentioned and soulmaking we're talking
• mentioned and soulmaking we're talking eros implies soulmaking soulmaking plays eros and both of them imply a
• eros implies soulmaking soulmaking plays eros and both of them imply a sense of beauty
• the senses so eros implies beauty and a love of beauty and an attraction to beauty and
• and this is very much connected with the whole movement of the eros and soul making we've said eros needs this depth
• whole movement of the eros and soul making we've said eros needs this depth this dimensionality this unfathomability
• either no or let's say very limited uh eros there there's very either none or very limited
• are not unfathomable and we said eros needs an unfathomability and
• um it's a kind of attention and a kind of assumption that stops the eros and therefore the aero psychologus dynamic
• because there's not this unfathomability that eros needs there is a sense of beauty there but the
• um but so there is some some degree of beauty but the eros there is actually very limited
• i would actually say um in terms of we're asking about eros and sense experience that this uh that
• limit or uh there is a lack there of eros as well within that way of practicing why
• reality that barrier there prevents eros so where there's a fixed reality view
• so where there's a fixed reality view the eros is is limited in this case in relation to sense experience and in that
• um but perhaps most importantly the reason why it lacks or limits the eros is this way of practicing of so-called
• and not particularity and not the retained otherness of eros it tends instead towards oneness in other words
• etc all that tend to actually limit limit the eros with regard to sense experience and
• everything about it beauty and eros implicating each other and soulmaking all that and it has this
• interested um in soulmaking and eros which as i said always include a sense of beauty
• in a way that allows soulmaking allows eros understands differently in our relationship with sense
• in relationship to the senses necessary for beauty and necessary for eros and soulmaking
• the place of soulmaking and the necessity of that and the place of eros and all that there's no problem that the
• there um and the actual the lack of eros and soulmaking within the within the wider
• in regard to our sense experience in regards to the eros and soulmaking and let that in dimensionality etc and
• if we open our view and if we understand um this soulmaking dynamic and eros psychologos and everything we've been

• okay so if we if we just briefly sum up why why eros you know why i make this delineation well yes because it's part
• um eros involved in our relationship with the past and with awaiting to different
• the past and with awaiting to different degrees and said eros has evolved in our relationship with the path and awakening
• and the notion of awakening and therefore eros needs to be investigated there
• um as i said eros um
• uh making the link between sexuality and sacredness that sexuality and eros are not just defilements and and we want
• um people use the word eros if they use it at all in psychological or um other
• it's more for me about um what does this way of defining eros uh what does it lead to
• and the way we're defining eros sits within a certain conceptual framework of other
• and how does this notion of eros is how is it supported by that other set and how does it support
• way so if i'm looking at a text or if i have this concept of eros um uh it's one part within a much larger
• in this case can't actually take eros on its own and um and sort of understand that without
• imaginal practice for soulmaking i can't really take it on its own eros um separate from those and hope to
• same here um in relation to eros eros is as i said tied in with a whole other web of
• contextualization and relationship and the place something like eros takes within a larger set and framework of
• together so really um we're going to elaborate what eros means over quite a long time and and ask
• um definition in relation to eros specifically is that eros classically is a god a divinity
• simple definition and i say eros is a desires a kind of desire it's a
• to use that language a lot of erotic object means what's eros in relationship to
• um beloved if you like if you want a more poetic language so eros wants more let's say contact and connection with
• um so it has to experience intimacy it wants eros is a wanting to penetrate the erotic object more to open more to
• words in particular but using these words broadly eros is a the wanting of more contact more connection more touch
• more i don't know the myth from the classical myth but eros always goes along with i think it's another god
• something once more more so i'm going to say that that pothos is a part of eros when we talk about eros it it it implies
• say that that pothos is a part of eros when we talk about eros it it it implies and involves and
• um the power of it as a way of thinking about eros that it has all kinds of implications and consequences
• um multi-directionality of what eros actually is and what it does
• okay so again notice again eros is not that we're not defining it um
• is involved and i'm going to come back to this in eros but it's not that's not actually what eros is after nor are we
• to this in eros but it's not that's not actually what eros is after nor are we as i said equating it with the uh what
• um nor love so the way we're using the word eros doesn't we're not equating them with all
• so in some instances um eros is the bigger concept for instance in relation to sexuality
• definitions um eros would be the smaller concept so i would say eros is
• um eros would be the smaller concept so i would say eros is um a part or an element of life force or
• at any time or just in our existence and eros would be one directionality and one manifestation of the way that life force
• other teachers um defines eros as really that force that moves towards unification towards
• actually more complex so go back to r1 our definition eros is this desire this wanting for more contact more connection
• this both of us will elaborate this a lot more eros will always um want more it will always want more
• so how do we recognize eros how do we recognize the presence of eros
• how do we recognize eros how do we recognize the presence of eros in our experience in our life in our
• awareness to be able to notice mind states if we're calling eros a mind state or a state of being to develop the
• uh as i've said before and repeat again when we talk about eros like everything we're talking about a spectrum so it can
• that we can handle and work with and not get bowled over with really intense eros and we'll come back to that whole
• in the definition and part of recognizing yours is that eros involves attraction
• because of that um with that attraction eros has this felt tension in it so eros usually
• um with that attraction eros has this felt tension in it so eros usually involves some degree of tension
• temporarily dissolved in union there's a um an element in eros if you like that preserves the otherness and therefore
• more as i said um but recognizing yours again eros often has a certain what we might call
• the word libido which some people use interchangeably with eros [music]
• fatness or fruitfulness that's that's very key to our definition of eros is fruitfulness and gladness and also
• all things have been made liquid in other words not rarified so eros and and it's uh
• a part of the erotic experience a part of the experience of eros um
• have to explain in uh in more detail later is that eros always invokes stimulates or involves or is involved
• stimulates or involves or is involved with the imaginal and soulmaking eros always invokes involves with invol is
• of soulmaking the magical is in itself rich and and so eros brings more richness this whole process of soul
• um or image is part of eros or involved with eros as a part of how we recognize
• or image is part of eros or involved with eros as a part of how we recognize it
• towards the object that's also recognizable as a feature of eros there's this dynamism of attraction
• conceptuality so there's a dynamism involving eros that has to do with that um dynamic it's
• of image idea eros itself that becomes the object much more about this later
• but there as i said if we're recognizing eros attraction juiciness tension dynamism
• so we talk about the spark as well there's an arousal of eros of interest we're really interested in
• but it's also a feature of when there is eros the energy body is also aroused now that arousal again can be very intense
• also involves ourselves ourselves and involves our eros so the eros itself becomes erotically beautiful to us our
• that but let's say let's use the term delight and say that eros usually is accompanied by or involves delight
• intrinsically delightful if you like um and eros because it goes with all that
• so that you can have a bliss without eros or without delight or without soul making for example
• ways it's not for reasons i'll explain it's um it's just bliss without eros and without soulmaking delight the delight
• um okay so you've done recognizing eros uh again just run through those um big
• does and expand and enrich the very definition or the delineation of eros and really fill it out over the retreat

• when we use this word eros what we mean when we use this word eros so to begin to do that
• a bit on what gradually what we mean by eros and what it involves and what it implies etc where it goes in the course
• why make this extra delineation of something called eros and
• always always contextual so that in talking about eros now there is the context there's a double context
• teaching and the context in which one teaches so that um teaching about eros and desire and shining a different light
• and one day one of the themes that was offered was eros so uh there's a couple of things to me
• larger group that that were interested in eros and elected to go into that group had to be divided into three to
• this can we actually uh just kind of say or agree what we mean by eros and immediately it became very apparent
• this group with quite a large range of what people thought eros meant or what it meant to them no one was particularly
• was saying i might have misunderstood but anyway she seemed to equate eros and desire
• thanatos for some of you all know is another greek word eros is a greek word and in
• theory um eros is sometimes equated with the life instinct the instinct to want to
• um but there was this equation of eros with uh life as opposed to death and the buddha was very interested in
• so eros as we are using it on this retreat um
• clearly related but let us say and we can come back to this that eros is a kind of desire specific it's still very
• um what we're talking about on this retreat and the teachings about eros and desire has a context now
• um actually fair amount already about eros um in in the context of imaginal
• what i'm calling the soulmaking dynamic of the or the eros psyche logos dynamic and i will explain more about that on
• um i want to expand that piece about eros elaborate more um regarding eros and its place and its
• eros elaborate more um regarding eros and its place and its potential
• say again why why bother why uh introduce this other word eros when we have lots of lots of words as we
• want to say you know when we use the word eros um it includes sexuality uh in in the
• way we're meaning uh what we're meaning by eros so we include sexuality we include sexual attraction sexual energy
• not to over labor at the point but why introduce this concept of eros why distinguish something called eros from
• introduce this concept of eros why distinguish something called eros from craving or greed or desire in general
• it's there already eros is where um meaning that term what we mean by
• um meaning that term what we mean by eros is already functioning every day in our lives
• um and where does it lead this thing that we're going to call eros um because and this is one of our
• um because and this is one of our central contentions eros will lead to um
• up if you like regions of soul to use a certain language it eros is very connected with soulfulness with
• kinds of things eros is connected with a sense of divinity and with what we've been
• uh because they're very woven in to to this whole theme of eros so that's one reason it's in our life
• so that's one reason it's in our life already eros we already experience it we just need to draw it out and investigate
• highlight the potential of opening to a recognition of the sacredness of eros itself
• itself sacredness of eros itself again this is something we're going to come back to a
• we can see that and and it's very different to see that eros is sacred rather than as a defilement and that
• sacralizing sexuality um rather than just viewing eros or sexuality as a defilement or as leading
• of that more is is what we're going to call eros what we're calling eros
• is is what we're going to call eros what we're calling eros and if i'm interested in that if i'm
• example in a long-term relationship what keeps the eros alive what stifles it what kills it what erodes it what
• just allows it to fritter away and what keeps the eros alive in a long-term relationship
• that the the re-sacralizing of um sexuality love but also of eros and making it more part of the path uh
• doing why make this discrimination of something called eros is really uh related to what i said before we're
• instance assert something like um the sacredness of eros i am telling you euros is sacred and then you know so
• happens how does it affect this whole thing called eros if i view it as sacred even if i just try and view it even just
• with ideas and concepts so eros and pervades very broadly right we mean much more than sexuality
• here um eros can also be or can seem to be primarily at different times it can seem
• whenever there is soulmaking sacredness in our existence eros is involved
• involved eros is involved whenever they're soulmaking
• investigations that we're going into around eros and soulmaking um more or less interesting
• in the flavors or the characters if you like of the ways eros or libido if we say life force
• and they differ in the slaves the characters the way eros expresses in their lives the fire if you like if
• their lives the fire if you like if euros is a kind of fire the fire of eros looks and burns differently people's
• least it seems to me in the amount strength and depth if you like of eros or the eros or the libido that flows
• strength and depth if you like of eros or the eros or the libido that flows through them in their life or into them
• chronic and more pervasive blocking or inhibition of the eros and the libidos and it's not so much that a person
• times and all that um i i'd say that eros is a necessary and integral aspect or element if you
• and therefore um an inquiry into eros is important for anyone interested at all interested
• already find themselves in uncharted territory around eros around desire we're already there and and they need
• sacredness of divinity um eros all this we've touched before and in fact i'm going to probably in the
• too this retreat is a slightly different angle coming from the angle of eros emphasizing more the eros and
