Deracination is a state of separation or disconnection from one's cultural, traditional, and spiritual roots. This means that the individual who is deracinated feels disconnected from the cultural and familial traditions and identity that has grounded them as a person. What makes deracination especially powerful is that it is not always voluntary, but is often a consequence of forced displacement, imperialism, and racism. Thus, deracination speaks to how power dynamics can rip apart someone’s sense of identity, community, and belonging.
