What is this?

Mycelium is an expansive network of fine white filaments that exists below the surface of most environments and plays a vital role in the global cycle of nutrients and energy. It is a highly organized and essential part of the web of life whose role, as we are beginning to understand, is interconnected with all the species on this planet. When healthy, the mycelium acts as a bridge between plants, fungi, and other organisms. Working at a microscopic level, this ancient organism performs the functions of shredding complex environmental molecules and transporting nutrients, while also providing a protective cover for organisms, a vital energy source, and an integral part of natural ecosystems.
