• things up into parts is a an artifact of the left hemisphere's piecemeal attention so because it's trying to
• a different take on the world from that of the right hemisphere and if i can just put this in a couple of simple
• sentences the left hemisphere sees a word which is made up of fragments of tiny pieces that
• and so it's this world is one that this left hemisphere's version of the world is one made up of bits that are separate
• kinds of understanding given by the hemispheres need to be combined um it's not that something's wrong with
• um it's not that something's wrong with the left hemisphere's understanding it's just that it's so very powerful so very
• contrasting vision of the right hemisphere so
• together in order to find any meaning or direction in them the right hemisphere is seeing something which is coherent
• of that context it's something else completely the right hemisphere understands the implicit all the things
• world and in fact you can experimentally suppress one hemisphere at a time and what we find is that when the left
• what we find is that when the left hemisphere is working alone it it does see things that we would normally see as
• inanimate whereas the whereas the right hemisphere working alone we'll see things that normally we would think of
• into a section of about 450 pages in the new book looking at these hemisphere differences
• is that the right hemisphere sees the body as a whole but the left hemisphere only
• the right hemisphere sees the body as a whole but the left hemisphere only recognizes parts
• uh it doesn't contain the full body image that is in the right hemisphere and there's several lines of
• of evidence that suggests that anorexia nervosa is in fact a right hemisphere deficit condition it has many of the
• elements of autism about it which also simulates a right hemisphere deficit condition in some cases i mean i would
• map for the territory and i wanted to talk a bit about that left hemisphere issue idea too you know so
• information about the world the left hemisphere is inferior to the right so it's not just attention i've
• and creativity and in all these respects the left hemisphere is inferior to the right and it's interesting that
• exclusively due to damage to the right hemisphere not to damage to the left so it is
• misperceptions the misconceptions of the left hemisphere and this on the other hand has the hallmarks the stamp of
• hand has the hallmarks the stamp of coming from the right hemisphere which is more vertical
• something about the degree to which each of the hemispheres can be taken to be vertical
• could also describe a bit if you would why you think the right hemisphere and its concentration on narrative per
• kind of those are those left hemisphere types that you're talking about
• way of looking at the world the right hemisphere has two and yet they're not quite compatible so in a world like ours
• extends the narrow range of what we might describe as left hemisphere consistency
• um very much things that are identified with the right hemisphere an intuitive grasp that if they stop and think
• interest uh i think that connects the hemisphere hypothesis how would you define intuition and
• than just categorical examples in the way the left hemisphere isn't so in any case all i'm really saying is that i
• consciously say how we did something the left hemisphere which knows diddly squat about how we actually did get there
• important element is that it's actually the right hemisphere contribution to them more obviously in the case of
• nonetheless importantly in reason and science it is the right hemisphere's contribution that is a really important
• that doesn't make um a sort of left hemisphere procedural um analysis of the piece worthless so i
• structure that it's the right hemispheres open active receptivity that allows something
• um and that then um it goes to the left hemisphere where it's um seen as oh yes it's one of those
• it should be taken back into the right hemisphere where a new richer hole can be created now that's
• attracted to it as a whole the right hemisphere phase you then start to play it and discover that you have to
• mean that time was wasted the left hemisphere's contribution is very important but the point is it's
• but we often think nowadays that we think in a very linear left hemisphere way that opposites are the two ends of a
• into actuality and the role of the right hemisphere in doing that and you just walked through a sequence of thoughts
• walked through a sequence of thoughts where you said that the right hemisphere in some sense presents the global
• that's another image that i would say and your vision of the left hemisphere operating at the level of detail in the
• operating at the level of detail in the right hemisphere operating at the level of totality and the need for all of that
• um collapse is caused by the right hemisphere i don't i don't know that at all i mean what what we know is that
• a thing without its opposite and so there's this left hemisphere fantasy that we can create a world in which all
• rather as i say the left hemisphere wants either or he wants things black and white the right
• wants things black and white the right hemisphere is able to see that they can be both hand and
• i don't think we should dismiss the what the left hemisphere has just has to offer so we need not either either or
• what you might describe as this left hemisphere reduced ideological view of the world
• one of the most comprehensive analyses of hemisphere differences in the 450 pages of the first part of this book but
• arm of a paradox comes from the left hemisphere and one from the right hemisphere and guess what the one that
• hemisphere and one from the right hemisphere and guess what the one that comes to the right hemisphere actually

• goldberg's notion of the right hemisphere let's say as an anomaly detection system so imagine this you
• map out that new crevice and so you imagine that your left hemisphere built up or there's a representation of that
• let's say you have right hemisphere damage in the parietal lobe and you lose half
• something to do with the left hemisphere's way of understanding things and what is really fascinating is that
• the future in other words once it's gone from the left hemisphere's attention it ceases to exist so it's not even not
• as though this it's not as though this left hemisphere tendency is simply
• able to see something but knowing that it's there and the right hemisphere doesn't engage in this kind of denial at
• see something or it you know but the left hemisphere for the left hemisphere if it isn't in the map as it were then
• reductive materialism in the world of the transcendent right hemisphere and it's he wants to keep that
• and sakura in these practices that i think produce a right hemisphere revelation of harmony and totality and
• typically to it's typically to um to do what the left hemisphere always does which is to um turn it into a
• is that that instrumentalization which would be a left hemisphere function is extremely useful if you have a narrow
• totalitarian state not this narrow left hemisphere intellect let's say it was the capacity for
• attention that we seem to be focusing on when discussing right hemisphere function

• and it also goes with a sense of self-righteousness the left hemisphere when things have been pointed out to it
• people deny that a limb uh if their right hemisphere is paralyzed they have a left paralyzed
• belongs to you doctor nothing to do with me because the left hemisphere is always right and it gets furious when
• old wrong way of conceiving the left and right hemispheres and i have to say that everything that we used to think is
• work have been about but one of those cliches was that the right hemisphere might sort of
• and rational and reasonable but actually the left hemisphere is not reasonable in its attitudes and is not
• that is solid and dependable the right hemisphere is much more solid and dependable it's much more in touch with
• dependable it's much more in touch with reality the left hemisphere is the one that jumps to conclusions so when daniel
• people have said so is the impulsive one the right hemisphere and the more deliberative one the left house the
• is not talking about the two different hemispheres but talking more about the upper parts of the brain
• we're getting there to that puritanical highly left hemisphere-dominated way of thinking
• this left hemisphere drive to that truth as they see it people who think they have
• don't have an obvious utility but the left hemisphere has got us into the mess we're in by always pursuing utility

• um trying to make sense of some of them um in the light of the two hemisphere hypothesis um for which you're now very

• straight to that that the brain is divided of course the two hemispheres work together but they also attend to
• further in the direction of privileging the left hemisphere which um spoiler alert is the less intelligent

• or either the left hand side or the right hemisphere whereas the right hemisphere sees both and it knows that

• talking about the fact that the left hemisphere sees almost an antagonistic sort of adversarial relationship with

• and more quickly with the left hemisphere than the left hemisphere does with the right although for what the
• with the right although for what the right hemisphere knows to be valuable it needs to get
• that information back to the right hemisphere um that's a very simple example but when you look at as i do at
• understand what it is the right hemisphere is talking about so when people lose
• people lose um their right hemisphere through perhaps a stroke or an injury or much of
• how would their behavior differ well the person with the left hemisphere stroke would have obvious
• 89 of us are probably right-handed so for most people a left hemisphere stroke has
• when there is a problem with the right hemisphere the whole of that person's world altars
• the hardest things for people caring for people after right hemisphere injuries or strokes is that they no longer seem
• well you know thank goodness it wasn't a left hemisphere they're still functional they're just a functional [ __ ]
• at the bedside of patients who had things wrong with their right hemisphere and realized how just how crazy their
• that the rehabilitation of somebody after a left hemisphere stroke but in which they may have lost
• is much easier than rehabilitating somebody after the right hemisphere is true have you got any idea
• connected to make sense whereas to the other hemisphere the right hemisphere the world is made up of things that are
• not explicit is important whereas the left hemisphere only understands the explicit meaning can't understand a joke
• people become more reliant on their left hemisphere i'd say they give more and more reliance to their right hemisphere
• hemisphere i'd say they give more and more reliance to their right hemisphere actually
• one of the most obvious is that using the left hemisphere um
• the world feed straight into using the left hemisphere and also once you get outside of decisions that
• the balance decisions the right hemisphere would make because that would mean taking into account individual
• to express the view of the left hemisphere it's money for old rope which is why it's so easy for clever dicks to
• argue that um because as it were the left hemisphere's picture which is the one that language is designed to put
• you you're taking in all the things my right hemisphere does which is to make my voice not sound like a computer
• going on so actually communication is much more the right hemispheres thing it's more effective at communicating at
• and we never know quite what's going to happen it's only the left hemisphere that thinks that kind of thing so
• understanding of the difference between the hemispheres since they attend to the world differently is a moral act how you

• hemisphere at a time and with the left hemisphere quieted or suppressed the right hemisphere sees the world as
• hemisphere quieted or suppressed the right hemisphere sees the world as composed of
• that we experience if the right hemisphere is able to still the chatter of monkey mind in the left
• the chatter of monkey mind in the left hemisphere and actually be present for once as the world comes into being for
• theory the map the diagram that the left hemisphere holds and the trouble is that if you use the
• and the trouble is that if you use the left hemisphere's way of looking at the world you soon begin to believe that the
• alerted you to this between the reliability of the left hemisphere and the its denial of reality there are
• the first is that if somebody has a right hemisphere stroke they may have a paralyzed left half of the body at
• the other way around if you have a left hemisphere stroke the safari immediately is aware that
• you can ask somebody who has a right hemisphere's stroke to move their left arm and of course they can't but they
• managed to interview as it were each hemisphere separately
• relatives and what transpires is the left hemisphere has a remarkably high opinion of itself compared with what
• other people think whereas the right hemisphere tends to be a little bit on the downside but is much closer to
• i am at pains to evaluate how much the left hemisphere is able to clock reality compared with the
• world into being for us in every case the right hemisphere is more theoretical more accurate better able to gauge
• very preponderantly more um following left hemisphere falling for right hemisphere damage and
• left hemisphere falling for right hemisphere damage and following left
• and then there is the fact that the left hemisphere having a theory about things wants everything
• daglin and they they had patients with one hemisphere at a time knocked out
• now interestingly the two hemispheres of the same person respond quite differently to this
• question so when the right hemisphere is asked to comment
• it's a lie but when the left hemisphere of the very same individual
• see the imprint of the way the left hemisphere understands the world
• understands the world and the way the right hemisphere understands the world
• this picture of the world is quite typical of how the left hemisphere would see it this picture is more like the
• see it this picture is more like the right hemisphere would see it it doesn't mean to say the left hemisphere picture
• right hemisphere would see it it doesn't mean to say the left hemisphere picture has no
• had a much greater grounding in all the things the right hemisphere is able to speak to us about
• much easier to express the left hemisphere's point of view because it's simple reductionist mechanistic nothing
• i'm getting at here that this right hemispheres take on things is far more subtle far more complicated far truer to
• and that's why i say we need to rebalance the hemispheres at the moment the left hemispheres is having it all
• rebalance the hemispheres at the moment the left hemispheres is having it all its own way
• its own way and the right hemisphere hasn't got a voice i mean literally the right
• voice i mean literally the right hemisphere is not where speech comes from speech comes from the left
• from speech comes from the left hemisphere um and so
• civilization the left hemisphere's resonant is to manipulate and to control to master
• pictures the mentality of the left hemisphere is such that it must believe that it is in
• let me explain that with right hemisphere damage the world literally seems two-dimensional it seems like
• interestingly one loses depth in time as well when the right hemisphere is damaged and depth in emotion but that's
• the way in which the models of the left hemisphere simple linear serial ways of thinking
• it's the targeting you see the left hemisphere is the one that grabs something and to target something is to
• should move on to something higher and the right hemisphere sees that each level of this pyramid is actually a way
