Open Future Coalition (OFC) addresses the disconnect between communities possessing solutions to global challenges and the resources they need to scale those solutions.
OFC recognizes the ingenuity and efficacy of grassroots organizations but observes them perpetually struggling for funding and operating in silos. This realization led to OFC's core mission: bridging the gap between resource-constrained grassroots initiatives and the tools and funding required for amplified impact.
OFC aims to empower these organizations by providing them with the infrastructure and resources they need to thrive. By connecting them with funding, fostering collaboration, and offering technological solutions, OFC enables these organizations to focus on their core mission of creating positive change.
A key challenge identified by OFC is the significant time and resources grassroots organizations expend on impact reporting and fundraising, diverting their efforts from actual impactful work.
To address this, OFC developed the Open Impact Platform. This platform streamlines project management, social engagement, and impact measurement into a single workflow. By integrating impact measurement into the daily operations, organizations can reduce redundancy and demonstrate their effectiveness to potential funders.
"One of the most horrifying statistics that brought me into all of this was seeing that these organizations are spending something like 40% of their time on impact reporting and as much as a third of their budgets on fundraising. And it was really challenging to see that that much time was spent chasing after resources rather than doing the work."
The platform also encourages collaboration and knowledge sharing among users through features like news feeds and discussion threads. This enables organizations to learn from each other's experiences, best practices, and challenges, further enhancing their collective impact.
OFC recognizes the significant funding gap faced by grassroots organizations, particularly in accessing institutional capital.
One of the solutions OFC proposes is bridging this gap by facilitating the flow of capital from institutional investors to local communities through community-based financial institutions like Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs). These institutions are deeply rooted in their communities and possess a nuanced understanding of local needs.
"Ideally, we'd be working directly with community funders to start. But one of the biggest challenges that we've seen is, you know, really the outcome of decades of disinvestment from these communities because there haven't been these direct paths to invest within their local communities."
OFC aims to empower local communities to guide their own investment terms, ensuring that funding aligns with their specific needs and priorities. This approach moves away from top-down decision-making and fosters a more equitable and democratic distribution of resources.
OFC emphasizes the importance of convening as a tool to break down silos and foster collaboration among diverse stakeholders, including practitioners, policymakers, funders, and researchers.
Through carefully designed convenings, OFC creates spaces for open dialogue, shared learning, and the identification of common challenges and opportunities. By connecting these stakeholders, OFC facilitates the flow of knowledge, resources, and support across traditional boundaries.
"Although it sounds lovely from an idealistic standpoint to, you know, hey, why aren't projects and funders having as much access to each other? Can't we just all put them all in one conversation? And then you start to realize that the second the projects and the funders are in a room together, all of the different underlying power dynamics start to show up and the projects start looking like what they think the funder wants them to be rather than what they are."
OFC also recognizes the importance of fostering local leadership and ownership. Their approach involves providing initial support and guidance while ensuring that the convened spaces eventually become self-sustaining and community-driven.
OFC's Open Future Fund is a demonstration project showcasing the power of collaborative funding and community-led impact.
The fund operates through three main pillars: - Syndication: Identifying common challenges within specific sectors and pooling resources from various funders to support projects addressing these challenges. - Fund of Funds: Investing in and supporting local fund managers who deeply understand their communities' needs and can effectively allocate resources. - Shared Services: Offering consulting services, asset innovation support, and access to OFC's tools and resources to further empower communities and organizations.
"So with Open Future Fund, we're starting with syndication. And so looking at really building upon the convening that we've already been doing over the last several years to help identify common obstacles and challenges within particular sectors."
By implementing this multi-pronged approach, OFC aims to demonstrate a new model for collaborative funding that prioritizes community needs, empowers local leadership, and unlocks the full potential of grassroots solutions to global challenges.
