What is this?

Masculinity can be thought of as both an ideological concept and an embodied identity. It is an active process, constantly being negotiated and redefined through physical and emotional performances. On a sociological level, it is a form of power that can be used to preserve the status quo through its reinforcement of the traditional gender norms and patriarchy. On an individual level, however, it is a means to explore aspects of one’s self through identity performance. Ultimately, masculinity is an identity that is constructed, contested, questioned, and ultimately lives in the complex intersection of culture, biology, and personal lived experiences.
