Dependent arising, or 'paticca-samuppada' in Pali, is a foundational principle in Buddhist thought that encapsulates the interdependent and conditioned nature of all phenomena. It maps out the intricate web of causes and conditions that give rise to and sustain both the arising and cessation of experiences and events. Far from merely an abstract theory, dependent arising eloquently shows how every moment is dynamically shaped by myriad interconnected factors, dissolving the illusion of independent, isolated entities. Through deep meditative inquiry into this principle, one begins to perceive the fluid, contingent flow of existence, thereby loosening the rigid constructs of self and other, permanence, and absolute separation. In this way, dependent arising is not only a profound insight into the nature of reality but also a guiding lens for cultivating liberative wisdom and compassion.
